Guide to Unique Photography

Poverty as an expression of art

visuels: Henri Berssenbrugge

Looking at this photograph, we are immediately reminded of the works of Jacob Riis and Lewis Hine, who recorded a vast amount of poverty around the turn of the last century.

Timeless Love

visuels: Marrie Bot

In the 80s, Marrie Bot (born in 1946) asked herself why she never saw photographs or films with elderly people naked or making love. A search for such images yielded nothing. Christian views, which dominated sexual morality for centuries, made the combination of age and eroticism a taboo.

Same same, but different

visuels: Ari Versluis

Photographer Ari Versluis and stylist Ellie Uyttenbroek have been working together since 1994. They are both fascinated by the striking dress codes of many social groups, which prompted them to start Exactitudes. It’s an endless project.

Hometown

visuels: Otto Snoek

Hometown is Snoek’s lifetime photography project about his city Rotterdam, which he started in 1997.

Daily life in China

visuels: Reineke Otten

In 2004 and 2005, Reineke Otten (1979) worked for the Dynamic City Foundation (DCF). DCF is a research and design institute focused on the rapid transformations of China’s urban landscape. Using her “streetology” method, Reineke travelled through China for seven weeks and shot more than 24,000 pictures in seven major cities. Her greatest challenge was to classify this massive amount of material in such a way as to obtain a workable profile.
